We are working with six composer-librettist teams...

For the 2019 edition of MCYO, composers are selected by invitation. Composers work with librettists of their choosing to write a short opera for young trained solo singers, aged 18 to 24 (approx.) and a small ensemble of (mobile) instrumentalists. Following a composer and librettist weekend in May/June 2019, these creative teams will develop their new operas.

Composers are mentored throughout the process by Nina Whiteman and Richard Strivens, with additional mentoring during the course.

  

May 31-  Composer and librettist weekend. Including practical workshops, discussion and beginning work on the operas

June 2

June - July  Composition period with regular mentoring meetings

​

July 12  Final score delivered to MCYO, to be sent out to performers to memorise prior to the summer course

​

Aug 27  Course Week 1: from score to stage - making opera work on stage

Sept 2   Course Week 2: performance preparation

Sept 5  Filming day

​

Sept 6  Performance day

​

The cost of the 2019 course will be £290 for composers, and £100 for librettists. Composers choosing to write their own libretto will need to pay the librettist's fee. This is a heavily subsidised fee thanks to our generous sponsors. (The actual cost to MCYO per participant is in the region of £1000.)
